General Mills said it changed how it sources and handles ingredients to ensure the corn starch for original Cheerios comes only from non-GMO corn. The sugar the original Cheerios use will now be solely non-GMO pure cane sugar.
Green America Corporate Responsibility Director Todd Larsen called the removal of GMOs from original Cheerios an important victory in getting GMOs out of the food supply. He said his expectation is that this will send a message to all food companies that consumers are increasingly looking for non-GMO products.
GMO Inside Co-Founder and Co-Chair John Roulac said the move by General Mills is a huge victory for the non-GMO movement. The group is now encouraging consumers to let General Mills know if it should make all Cheerios non-GMO.
