MURDER TRIAL: Report On Hedlund’s Firing To Be Kept Out Of Court

A judge says an internal report detailing the firing of a former Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent will not be used in an upcoming murder trial.

A judge ruled Friday that the report on Larry Hedlund has no information that defense lawyers could use to discredit him during the first-degree murder trial of Derrick McElroy.

McElroy is charged in the shooting death of 19-year-old Brandyn Preston in Fort Dodge in May of 2011. Hedlund oversaw an investigation that led to the arrest and is a witness in the case.

Last year, Hedlund was fired after reporting the governor’s SUV for speeding. He is suing the state, claiming the firing was retaliation against him.
