A main road in to Ames was closed for over three hours after a fatal car crash Thursday evening.

The collision happened just after 5:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of 13th Street.

Police say the driver of an eastbound car died when it crossed the center line into westbound traffic. The vehicle hit the side of the bridge and continued down the westbound lanes to collide with another vehicle head-on.

The westbound driver suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Mary Greeley Hospital.

The name of the deceased driver has yet to be released.
