A former Iowa Secretary of State is hoping to the regain the job he once held, following the announcement current Secretary of State Matt Schultz is running for Congress.

Republican Paul Pate announced Thursday he will vie for his party’s nomination in 2104.

Pate says he wants to protect Iowans’ election process and provide non-partisan assistance to Iowa’s businesses.

“Iowans do not want nor can they afford to have the office of chief elections commissioner for the state occupied by a partisan political operative from either party. I have served the people of Iowa as Secretary of State and hold the experience to continue Secretary Schultz’s good stewardship of the office,” says Pate.

Pate was Iowa’s Secretary of State from 1995 to 1999 and has more recently served as the mayor of Cedar Rapids from 2002 to 2006.
