Last month legislators said the farm bill was only getting pushed back to mid-January. Now House Ag Chair Frank Lucas says it will probably be late-January.
While Lucas thinks the farm bill should be completed as soon as possible, he says big issues still need to be addressed, such as the standoff on dairy provisions between House Ag Ranking Member Collin Peterson and House Speaker John Boehner.
Lucas says he didn't realize the lack of flexibility on that particular issue. Boehner warns the farm bill won't come to the house floor with supply management in it.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack banked on the conferees finishing a bill by mid-January; it is unclear how much USDA is working to implement old farm law. Old farm law from the mid-20th century would double milk prices at the store.
