BRIDGE REPLACEMENT: DOT Holds Public Meeting
Johnston and Beaverdale residents are preparing for a major road construction project.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says the bridge on Beaver Drive over Interstate 35-80 needs to be replaced. The eight-month long project will cut off a busy route for thousands of cars. The bridge connects the north side of Des Moines to Johnston.
Tuesday night, neighbors met with the DOT in Johnston to learn more about why the project is necessary and what it will mean for them.
Debbie Stephens owns Stephens Automotive. She says she’s understands the need, but that doesn’t mean she likes it.
“I understand they need the bridge, but of course, it’s state DOT you don’t get any compensation, though you’ll have to do a lot of marketing, a lot of creative marketing to stay in business, and hopefully it doesn’t impact our business,” says Stephens.
She says her business has weathered other closings in the area due to construction and flooding.
