A southwest Iowa man had to rely on his survival skills after a crash Wednesday night.
The Iowa State Patrol says Timothy McCollum lost control on a rural Mills County road near in Malvern. His car went off the road and into a creek under a bridge and out of sight of the road.
McCollum was able to free himself but due to his injuries he couldn’t make it up the embankment. To catch the attention of someone driving by McCollum lit a fire.
He was flown by helicopter to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
