MURPHY’S LAW: Hoiberg Headache, McCaffery Celebrates, Zimmer Curses

There are few coaches in America more loved and respected by their players than Fred Hoiberg. That’s important right now, because the Cyclones will follow Hoiberg’s lead on Bubu Palo’s playing future at Iowa State.

A judge rules Palo can return to the team. Sexual assault charges against Palo were dropped, but on appeal, ISU kicked Palo off the team for violating the student code of conduct. Iowa State president Steven Leath clearly feels that while Palo has a right to continue as a student, he’s lost his privilege to play basketball. A judge disagrees. At the heart of the issue, does a judge have the right to tell ISU who can and cannot participate in extracurricular activities?

At least two Cyclone players–Georges Niang and Melvin Ejim–initially reacted with joy on twitter to the news Palo’s returning. Several hours later, they were only talking about Texas. Hoiberg has been put in a tough spot. He knows how his bosses feel, at least on the record. He knows how his players really feel too. Hoiberg must decide what to do. Palo tells the Ames Tribune he’s talked to Hoiberg, and though Palo won’t make the trip to Texas, he says he’ll be at practice Monday. As for playing time, that’s up to coach. And that’s a tough call. …

We all saw video of Fran McCaffery’s meltdown at Wisconsin. It played on a near endless loop. We hit play several times. The video of McCaffery celebrating with his team after the win at #3 Ohio State is the polar opposite. It’s awesome. The good stuff hits at the 2:30 mark. (Thanks to the pride of Coon Rapids, Jerry Palmer, for sharing the video.) …

The Vikings reportedly decided on Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as new head coach. Watching HBO’s Hard Knocks, we learned at least three things about Zimmer:

1) Players love him.
2) He chews more Red Man than the ’67 Cubs.
3) He uses more profanity than Chris Rock.

I’d play some of the video, but it’s not safe for work. Or church. Or most anywhere. It is language familiar to most pro football settings. …

I didn’t see many of the movies nominated for Academy Awards, but the film that impacted me the most was Lone Survivor. Gripping, humbling, sobering. Not always easy to watch, but it shouldn’t be. Highly recommended. …

Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show next month. Fallon brings new energy, everyman likability, and uncanny impressions. Not only is this Springsteen song a funny jab at Governor Christie, Fallon gets the Boss himself to sing along. …

Cubs fans hate Clark. Clark’s the new mascot, and though he’s no Cubbie Bear–you can only see him in Iowa–fans are overreacting to Clark. He’s an over-focus grouped cuddly bear not wearing pants designed to sell a lot of merchandise to families, and give kids someone to pose for pictures with. Clark’s not playing shortstop, though he might hustle more than Starlin Castro. …

The 16 baseball writers who looked at Greg Maddux’s 355 wins, 18 gold gloves, and 4 Cy Youngs, and decided he’s not worthy of the Hall of Fame, should have their voting privileges revoked. For everything. The Voice. American Idol. Murph & Andy Quickie Polls. All of it. …
