Whiteout conditions are being blamed for several accidents Thursday.
The Iowa State patrol says a 25-plus car pile-up near mile marker 117 closed the eastbound lane of I-80.
It was the same story on Highway 169 north of I-80 with lanes completely shut due to another 25+ car pile-up according to Sgt. Bright.
I-35 at the Cummings exit had a jackknifed semi in the northbound lane. Traffic had to be rerouted around the accident.
The State Patrol had to pull in off-duty troopers to help due to the number of accidents.
Officers are reminding people to plan ahead if you are going out overnight. Despite the DOT deploying over a 160 snowplows, blowing snow will make for dangerous driving conditions.
