Moulton Elementary students in Des Moines and Iowa State University teamed up to pack food for Meals from the Heartland, Friday.

The volunteers put on hair nets and packed meals for the less fortunate. The packages are made of rice, protein, vegetables and vitamins.

The event was held to Mark Martin Luther King Junior Day.

The principal said today’s meal packing offers a special lesson to students.

“We wanted to teach our kids that although you receive a lot of support from the community, you have to pay it forward,” Cheri Dixon said.

The event also marked the one year anniversary of a relationship with Iowa State.

The university selected Moulton and King Elementary for a new initiative.

The goal is to get the student on the pathway to college by providing help in the schools now and through financial aid later.
