A man suffered minor injuries Friday afternoon when the dump truck he was driving was hit by a train in West Des Moines.

The accident happened just before 1:00 p.m. at a railroad crossing on Raccoon River Drive near the Grand Avenue intersection.

Officials say the train clipped the dump truck, which was hauling sand, and the truck flipped onto its side in the ditch. The driver, 59-year-old Rick Northway, had minor injuries but was trapped inside the truck and emergency crews had to free him. Northway was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center for treatment.

The West Des Moines Police Department says it is investigating the cause of the crash but it appears all of the warning devices at the crossing and the train’s horn were working.

Raccoon River Drive was closed for a few hours as crews cleaned up the scene.
