At least five people are dead following a house fire in northeast Iowa.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says a call came in about a fire at 5094 F Ave., about four miles southwest of Arlington at 3:35 a.m.

Fire crews from Arlington, Aurora, and Stanley were dispatched. They said flames from the home could be seen from a mile and a half away. When they arrived conditions were too dangerous for firefighters to attempt to enter the home.

Officials have not released the identities of those killed in the fire, but a family friend says a one-year-old and a four-year-old were among the victims.

Fire investigators from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office are on scene, looking into the cause of the fire. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is also on the scene, assisting in the investigation.
