A youth shelter is looking to expand, but they say that’s not necessarily good news.
Construction will soon begin at Des Moines’ Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. It will cost them nearly four million dollars.
YESS is a private non-profit that houses as many as 56 juveniles every night.
The two-story addition would provide an additional 32 rooms and extra space for therapy, a library and room to play.
“It’s not a really exciting announcement to make,” says YESS Executive Director Steve Quirk. “But the number of abused abandoned and neglected children it`s growing.”
YESS sees nearly a thousand kids each year and rarely has an empty bed, which means they have to turn away kids who need their help.
