Power went out for thousands in the metro on Sunday night, but most customers are now back online.

MidAmerican Energy reported more than 5,300 customers were without power in Des Moines around 8:30 p.m. Some MidAmerican Energy customers in Johnston, West Des Moines and Urbandale were also affected by the power outages.

By 10:30 p.m. MidAmerican Energy restored power for more than 2,000 customers, leaving around 2,500 without power.

The majority of customers had the power restored early Monday morning. ¬†Just after 2 a.m., MidAmerican Energy reported roughly 200 customers were without power and around 10:30 a.m. fewer than 10 customers still didn’t have electricity.

A spokesman for MidAmerican Energy said the outages were mainly in the Merle Hay and Hickman areas of Des Moines.  The power outages were caused by a combination of high winds and fallen trees, according to the energy company.
