The Des Moines Habitat for Humanity group moved 27 metro families into new homes in 2013.  On Saturday, the group dedicated the first home of 2014.

The Ankeny home was donated by Bank of America and upgraded by Habitat. Kathy of Des Moines had to meet several requirements to receive the home, including taking a financial home ownership course. She purchased the home home through a no-insurance mortgage.

Kathy will officially close on her new home this Thursday.

Executive Director Lance Henning said Kathy is very happy to earn the title of home owner.

“She has always been living in a rental situation and to finally in her lifetime be able to own her own home, she’s excited about that,” Henning said.

Habitat for Humanity encourages people to take part in the winter warrior campaign and volunteer.  The event runs from now through March 31.
