MINIMUM WAGE: Branstad Hasn’t Ruled Out Increase

Governor Branstad wouldn’t say he’s against raising Iowa’s minimum wage this year but he also wouldn’t say he’s for it.

Featuring on IPTV’s Iowa Press, Branstad said he would consider raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. But he wants to study the issue first.

“I want to wait and see what happens in the legislative process,” the governor, who last raised the state’s minimum wage over 20 years ago, said. “I’ve always reserved judgment on these things until I see it. I think in 1990 I signed an increase but it all depends upon the magnitude of it and what impact it will have on the state’s economy.”

Branstad says he prefers to focus on bringing more jobs into the state that pay much higher than the minimum wage.
