A Wapello County judge has declared a mistrial in a decades old cold case.

Robert Pilcher faces first degree murder charges for the death of 17-year-old Mary Jayne Jones nearly 40 years ago.

Jurors say they could not reach a verdict after a week of deliberations, and Thursday the judge ruled the case a mistrial.

The 17-year old girl was found dead in a farmhouse in rural Wapello County on April 9th, 1974. Pilcher was a suspect at the time of the murder but police didn’t have the evidence to prove his guilt. That changed in 2012 when evidence from the cold case was put through modern DNA testing.

Court records show a second trial is set for March 25th.
