Clouds will increase tonight ahead of an approaching winter storm. Temperatures will drop to the teens overnight. A few flurries may be possible tonight through early Tuesday, but the main event will kick in Tuesday afternoon.

A WINTER STORM WATCH is in place for areas along and south of I-80 from 6AM Tuesday to 6AM Wednesday. Des Moines is included.

Snow will be heaviest on Tuesday during the afternoon and early evening, potentially making a mess of the evening commute. Des Moines is expected to see around 4" of snow, with 6" possible along the Missouri border.

Winds will be strong during and after the snow, with wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph possible. In southern Iowa, this will make travel difficult through early Wednesday. Then, as temperatures drop, dangerous wind chills will be possible Wednesday as well.

Temperatures will remain cold through the rest of the week with highs only in the teens.
