Des Moines police say a teen shooting victim stole an SUV because he thought, “his only chance to stay alive was to steal the vehicle and drive himself to the hospital.”

Police say 18-year-old Raymond Shorter was robbed and shot by a friend Saturday night when Shorter thought they were on their way to a party. It happened in the area of 21st and Mondamin.

When Shorter got out of the vehicle, the driver came around to the passenger side and pointed a gun at him. The suspect told him to give him everything in his pockets, and took about $200 from Shorter. He then told Shorter to run.

The suspect shot him in the leg but Shorter kept running. He told police he noticed a running SUV parked on the side of the street and jumped in and drove himself to Mercy Hospital. When he arrived at the hospital he struck a parked vehicle and then hit the building. When officers arrived at the hospital after a call from Mercy, they found Shorter laying on the ground at the hospital’s west entrance.

Police say Shorter told them who shot him.

Police say they’ve made no arrests in the case.
