A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder for killing his parents on the Meskwaki Tribal Settlement in Tama County.
Officials from the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa say Meskwaki Nation police officers were called to a home on the settlement late Wednesday night. When they arrived they found the bodies of Gordon Lasley Sr. and Kim Lasley.
Officials have not said how the husband and wife were killed.
Authorities have charged the son of the couple, 25-year-old Gordon Lasley Jr with two counts of first degree murder.
Tribal Chairwoman, Judith Bender said, "The Sac and Fox Tribe is a very close-knit community and we are all shocked and saddened by this. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all of those who are affected by this horrific event."
Since the crime happened on the settlement, which is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, the FBI was called in to help with the investigation.
Under federal law tribal courts have the authority to prosecute tribal members for crimes committed on their settlements but are not allowed to sentence anyone for more than three years.
In the case of more serious crimes such as a homicide, the FBI is called in to assist.
The Department of Criminal Investigation is also on the scene but are just assisting with the case.
The Meskwaki Nation Police are the lead on the investigation and won't be releasing anymore information until the investigation is complete.
