The Des Moines Airport Authority has voted to approve a new private firefighting service.

Tuesday morning a two-year contract with Pro-Tec Fire Services was agreed on unanimously.

The airport will get three firefighters per shift and two fire trucks. The board says that’s typical for airports the size of Des Moines’.

However, some pilots are worried about staffing and response time.

The Pro-Tec crew would replace firefighters with the Iowa National Guard after it ends flight operations of its jets.

It’s expected to cost $921,000 the first year and $965,000 the second year.
