Even before to the farm bill’s passage, agricultural groups have been examining exactly what’s new for farm policy.
Among other things the new law eliminates direct payments to farmers, and reforms the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program for the first time in almost 20 years.
The bill’s authors also say they’ve strengthened the crop insurance program. Senior Policy Analyst with the Iowa Corn Growers Association Amanda De Jong says, in that area, the new farm law makes two primary changes.
“The enterprise unit program, they’re going to make that a permanent program.” DeJong says, “And then they’ve also developed a new program called the supplemental coverage option. There are a lot of limits, there will only be for people who participate in the price-loss coverage option under the commodity title.”
