Students at a West Des Moines school learned about health and fitness from an Olympian on Wednesday.
Carlos Kirby, a Valley alum and two-time Olympic bobsledder, visited Phenix Elementary to lead the “Wellness Wednesday” activities.
The program is five years old. Students do everything from tasting new foods to working out.
Teachers say today’s visit from Kirby was a special treat.
“To have people come and talk to the kids that put a personal spin on it or help them to understand why it’s so important in their lives, to see people who are successful and have incorporated wellness as part of their everyday living,” principal Andrea Bocook says.
Kirby was the first Iowan to compete in the Winter Olympic Games.
