After several of inches of snow and freezing rain fell Monday morning, most is now a bunch of puddles. As the temperatures drop overnight those puddles could easily turn into ice.

A big concern is slippery sidewalks.

According to EMC Insurance, slips and falls are the leading cause of accidental death in the US.

Experts recommend walking in the grass because it has more traction.

They also say stomping instead of walking heal toe like you normally would is safer, because you have more surface area and balance.

“A slip and fall can cost about $12,000 between lost work time and medical expenses,” EMC’s Larry Readout says. “You can have broken bones and they can be fatal. In Iowa we`ve had 2,000 deaths last year for fall related injuries.”

Experts say the worst falls don’t always happen on the iciest days.

People often get hurt because they are not paying attention and an unexpected ice patch gets the best of them.
