COUNCIL CONTROVERSY: Johnston Principal Makes Unwanted Decision

Last December, a photo of a Johnston High School student council member was posted to social media. The photo showed the council member at a party where alcohol was involved and it’s now causing a stir with other council members.

“We all feel like were standing up for what we believe in and were doing the right thing in this situation,” said Student Council President Jeremy Caracci.

Caracci said once elected to the council, students have to obey by a long list of guidelines. One of them includes no partaking in illegal activity.

“We wanted to make sure that were following right procedures, were following school policy,” Caracci said.

Policy states the academic adviser who oversees the council can remove the rule breaker. That’s exactly what adviser Chris Beghun did. However, Principal Brent Riessen disagreed and reinstated the student.

“There wasn’t a vote, there wasn’t a discussion, the officer was just put back in place without the students voice being heard,” Caracci said.

According to the council, Rieseen overlooked the student run organization and failed to follow procedure to reinstate a student.

As a result, Beghun resigned from the position because she feels the students’ voices aren’t being heard in the situation. Beghun however, still works as the high school’s science teacher.

Caracci said he is disappointed in the principal’s decision.

Channel 13 reached out to the Johnston Community School District but officials did not comment because the issue involves a student. On Monday, the school board will hold a meeting to discuss the issue.
