An Urbandale family was forced out of their home early Friday morning after a fire in the basement.

Around 3 a.m. firefighters were called to the home at 4907 154th Street.

The homeowner said the smoke detectors woke them up. When they went to investigate, they found a fire in the basement.

Everyone in the home was able to get out safely, and the fire was put out quickly by firefighters.

Urbandale Fire Chief Jerry Holt says the home is not habitable at this time, but not because of fire damage.

Holt said, “The whole home was filled with smoke.  So there is a lot of smoke damage.  As far as fire damage, all the fire was limited to the basement and it’s not a lot of fire damage.  Unfortunately, it’s a tremendous amount of smoke.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
