The former Indianola city attorney, accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the city, will go to prison for his crime.
Investigators say John Hoyman overbilled the city by more than $90,000.
City officials became suspicious of Hoyman’s billing practices last July. State investigators looked into the case and questioned Hoyman. They say he admitted to over inflating his billing fees over a six year period.
A judge convicted Hoyman on Thursday on a fraudulent practice charge. The length of his sentence, up to 10 years, will be set at a later date.
Whether Hoyman owes restitution to the city of Indianola for any money the city lost through his actions or through expenses incurred from the investigation will also be determined later.
