The woman accused of kidnapping her newborn nephew in Wisconsin and leaving him outside an Iowa gas station pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

Kristen Smith made the plea in federal court.

Smith was arrested in West Branch on February 6th after officials say she took her four-day-old nephew, Kayden Powell, from his mother’s home in Beloit, Wisconsin. The baby wasn’t found until the following day, near where Smith was taken into custody.

Powell was found in good condition, despite having been in a plastic tote outside in subzero temperatures.

Prosecutors say Smith faked a pregnancy online and even had a prosthetic belly.

If convicted she faces life in prison. Smith is also facing child endangerment charges in Iowa.
