AFSCME Local 0451 is donating to a veterans monument for the courthouse square in Newton.

The name of every Jasper County resident killed in action will be placed on the memorial at no charge.

“It is important to honor our fallen veterans. This monument will help ensure that future generations of Jasper County residents never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” says AFSCME Local 0451 President Jerry Jones.

The union is donating $2,500 to the effort. No public funds are being used in the project.

The union represents employees at the Newton Correction Facility and at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville.
