TROUBLING COMMENTS: Mason Addressing Regents
The Iowa Board of Regents is holding a special meeting Friday afternoon.
It wants to hear from University of Iowa president Sally Mason about her comments about sexual assaults on campus.
Mason told the university’s newspaper last week, “I’m not pleased that we have sexual assaults, obviously. The goal would be to end that, to never have another sexual assault. That`s probably not a realistic goal just given human nature, and that`s unfortunate.”
On Sunday several students responded with a silent protest during Mason’s annual presidential lecture. One carried a sign reading, “Not in my nature Sally.”
Mason has apologized to those who were offended by her comments and Thursday she held a “listening session” with students to hear their complaints about how sex assaults are handled by university officials.
The Regents heard from Mason Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and then went into a closed session.
