The two teens accused of shooting an American bald eagle have been charged.

Police say the two 15-year-olds shot an eagle while it was perched in a tree on farmland near Montezuma in mid-February.

After the bird was shot, authorities believe it fell from the tree and was shot again in the back where it was left paralyzed and suffering.

The Poweshiek Sheriff’s Office says both teens face four simple misdemeanor charges each ranging from operating a vehicle without a license to killing protected non-game.

Restitution is also being sought to cover the eagle’s emergency veterinary treatment.
