February’s Golden Apple recipient was awarded to a teacher at one of Des Moines’ most diverse middle schools. Despite the socio – economic and cultural challenges, Mrs. Mitchell-Gweah says each challenge is an opportunity.
After five years working in corporate America Stacie Mitchell-Gweah says it’s fitting she made the switch to education.
Mitchell-Gweah once sat in the same seats at Callanan Middle School. Now a she’s a business education teacher at the school. She considers her students to be like her own children. You respect her and she’ll respect you.
Students like Alexi Moore make up a socially and economically diverse population of students a Callanan. Many come from homes where the learning environment is less than ideal.
Mitchell-Gweah has high expectations, but she cares. She’s been known to visit and call students outside of school to help keep them on track. That attitude earned Mitchell-Gweah a Golden Apple Award. There’s no doubt Mitchell-Gweah’s unique teaching style has an impact on students.
