GOLDEN APPLE: February 2014 Winner

February’s Golden Apple recipient was awarded to a teacher at one of Des Moines’ most diverse middle schools.   Despite the socio – economic and cultural challenges, Mrs. Mitchell-Gweah says each challenge is an opportunity.

After five years working in corporate America Stacie Mitchell-Gweah says it’s fitting she made the switch to education.

Mitchell-Gweah once sat in the same seats at Callanan Middle School.  Now a she’s a business education teacher at the school.  She considers her students to be like her own children.  You respect her and she’ll respect you.

Students like Alexi Moore make up a socially and economically diverse population of students a Callanan.  Many come from homes where the learning environment is less than ideal.

Mitchell-Gweah has high expectations, but she cares.  She’s been known to visit and call students outside of school to help keep them on track. That attitude earned Mitchell-Gweah a Golden Apple Award.  There’s no doubt Mitchell-Gweah’s unique teaching style has an impact on students.
