DEADLY FIRE: One Killed In Booneville

One man is dead following a fire at a mobile home park in Booneville. Three fire departments were called to assist at the Prairie Village Mobile Home Park early Monday morning.

A neighbor called 911 and crews were dispatched to the home at 28925 360th Street just before 4 a.m.

“He saw the glow and that’s why he called,” says Van Meter Fire Chief John Bruen.

When they arrived the found the home fully engulfed with the front part of the trailer already collapsed.

“You couldn’t see nothing.  Just flames after flames,” says neighbor Melinda Enderton.

Bruen said, “With a trailer home they go up rather quickly.  Once they start, it’s hard to control it.  Basically it’s just containing it at that point.”

Officials have not released the name of the man killed but neighbors say he was in his 80’s.

“He was 88 years old known as ‘Bicycle Bob’.  Used to fix all the kids’ bikes in the park.  Been out here for 32 years,” says Prairie Village Mobile Home Park Manager Joann Hanson.

“Very pleasant.  Would come up and talk to you, help out too.  He would always come over and shovel during the winter too,” says Enderton.

The fire marshal has been called in to investigate the fire.  The cause of the fire is still unknown, but neighbors say they might know what happened.

“You have to be so careful with those space heaters and I’m pretty sure what he was trying to do.  He had 30% left in his tank and he was trying to get through the winter,” says Hanson.
