It’s been so cold for so long that the weather has caused more broken water mains in Des Moines than ever before.
In the last two months, Des Moines Water Works crews have repaired more than 300 breaks. That’s about how many they usually fix in an entire year.
But even with the unusual spike in cold weather, the number of water main breaks is actually going down.
This weekend, Des Moines had just three water main breaks. Officials say consistent temperatures and the insulation from the snow makes a big difference.
Moving forward, Water Works General Manger Bill Stowe says his concern won’t be on the cold but the heat. He says if the temperatures rise too quickly he’ll have more breaks to deal with in the spring.
