Residents of Ames will not see their property taxes pay for renovations of an Iowa State University building.

Voters shot down a $19 million bond referendum Tuesday. It would have paid for half of the cost to renovate the Scheman Building.

The plans include 35,000 square feet of exhibit and ballroom space, storage and a new truck access. Another building will also be added to the north side.

Sixty-two-percent of voters said no to the plan.

It’s unclear whether the current plans will continue or will be re-tooled.
