Gov. Terry Branstad is joining a group of governors fighting a California law that regulates living conditions for chickens.

The law prohibits the sale of eggs that come from hens raised in cages that don’t comply with California’s size and space requirements. Branstad says the law is unconstitutional, violates the commerce clause and places unnecessary burdens on Iowa farmers.

Branstad, along with state leaders from Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama and Kentucky are suing in federal court to block the new law.
