Its tournament time for girls basketball in Iowa and a handful of teams are competing for the chance to become champions.  While some are looking to the future of the sport, others are looking back at past championships.

The late Jim Zabel was calling the shots for Channel 13 and WHO Radio back in 1973.  Zabel’s work is part of a video collection that was donated to the Iowa Girls Athletic Union.

For the donation, Jim Faulkner of Wets Des Moines collected years of tournament tapes and allowed the girls union to make digital copies for the archives.  Since the copies were digital, the union decided to try putting them on YouTube.

“Basically I found out there’s a lot of passion for the six player ballgame.  It’s fun to watch some of the great players; Deb Coates, Denise Long, Sandy Van Cleave, some of the greats in Iowa basketball history,” said Jason Eslinger of the Iowa Girls High school Athletic Union.

The videos currently run from the 1970s back to the 1940s.

The girls union is always looking for any old tapes that people have.  Watch the videos on YouTube here.
