Investigators say a kerosene heater is likely to blame for a house fire this afternoon in Des Moines.
The fire started around 12:30 p.m. at 519 Franklin Ave. By the time firefighters arrived, flames were already peeking up from the back of the house.
Officials say the homeowner had been using the heater to thaw out the wood and a nearby ladder froze to the ground outside. The fire started after the homeowner left to run an errand.
Authorities say the damage was limited to the home’s exterior.
