Three people have been arrested and charged with murder in the deaths of two elderly people found dead in a fire in Crawford County earlier this week.
The bodies were discovered after fire crews were called to1872 Milford Road in rural Deloit Monday afternoon on a structure fire. One of the victims, 80-year-old Marvin Huesling died from several gunshot wounds. The other victim, believed to be 81-year-old Alice Huisenga, died from homicidal violence. Her DNA identification is still pending.
Officials say Huesling and Huisenga were friends and both lived in Carroll County.
Three Denison residents have been arrested in the crime. Twenty-six-year-old Michael Schenk, 19-year-old Jayden Chapman, and 36-year-old Erika Haberberger-Dains all face two counts of first degree murder and one count of first degree arson.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the murders were likely the result of an attempt to steal scrap metal that went wrong. Witnesses spotted the three in a vehicle near the home around the time the fire started. There isn’t a known link between the victims and the suspects.
Schenk, Chapman, and Haberberger-Dains are being held in the Crawford County Jail.
