Windsor Heights police say a suspicious item found during a routine traffic stop Wednesday night turned out not to be a threat.

Just after 5:30 p.m., police pulled over a car in the westbound lanes of I-235 near 22nd Street for failure to yield to a traffic signal. Officers say they found a grenade in the car, and called in a bomb squad to check it out.

In the meantime, people in the area were moved to a safe distance and one lane of traffic was closed.

The bomb squad determined the grenade was not an active or live threat.

The driver, Lee Nelson, was arrested on unrelated misdemeanor charges and taken to the Polk county Jail.
