The Iowa Methodist School of Nursing building is officially down.

It only took 18 seconds, but preparing for Sunday morning’s implosion took months.

Crews stripped out the interior and filled more than 300 holes in the walls with explosives.

Six-year-old cancer patient Joe Mausser got to press the button early Sunday morning while his little brother Nick held the remote.

Crews say it will take a few days to clear all the debris. More than 90 percent of the building’s material will be recycled.

UnityPoint Health hopes to expand its emergency services and critical care facilities in place of the old building.
