The Iowa Hawkeyes will have to win a play-in game before the team makes the NCAA tournament’s final 64 team field.

They go in as an 11 seed in the Midwest region and will take on Tennessee on Wednesday.

The Hawks finished the season on a rough note losing their opening round game in the Big Ten tournament against Northwestern.

Despite the extra challenge, Coach Fran McCaffery says he is still happy with where his team is.

“We’re thrilled. It’s been a long journey to get this team to continue to improve. Our fan base has been phenomenal and supported us every step of the way,” McCaffery said.

Wednesday’s especially emotional for the Hawkeyes. It’s the same day McCaffery’s son, Patrick, is set to undergo surgery to remove a tumor in his thyroid area. The family waits to find out if that tumor’s cancerous.
