A family is safe after a fire forced them from their Des Moines home and into the cold early Tuesday morning.
Seven people were in the home at 1106 Scott Avenue, three adults and four children. The fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. Police noticed smoke, and then flames coming from the roof.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and quickly put the fire out.
District Chief Dan Burke says investigators will not need to be called in because the homeowners were able to help pinpoint the cause of the fire.
“At this time we’re leaning more toward an electrical fire up in the attic. They were having trouble with their electricity last night and I think that’s probably the cause,” says Burke.
MidAmerican Energy was called in to cut power to the home.
The Red Cross was also called in to help the family find a temporary place to stay.
Burke says damage to the home is “extensive.”
