NEW DETAILS: Secret Settlements ‘Involved Age Discrimination’

New details have emerged into a possible reason why the directors of a dozen state agencies offered secret settlements to state workers who were let go.

The settlements involved 24 employees who received more than $400,000.
As part of the agreements, the workers were required to withdraw complaints against the state.

According to the Des Moines Register, some of the complaints involved allegations of age discrimination and retaliation against whistle blowers.

Governor Branstad says he was unaware of the secret settlements. He says they happened as part of a reorganization process.

“Confidentially provisions that prevent disclosure of agreements are wrong,” Branstad said Monday. “What really galls me is that when the people are kept in the dark and as a result of that, they suspect bad things are going on.”

Branstad adds that reorganization has been saving the state more than $700,000 a year.
