You’ve probably heard of Zumba, a Latin dance gaining popularity in gyms across the country. But you’ll be hard pressed to find a Zumba class like the one at Angie Gallegher’s West Des Moines fitness facility.
“We just switch out the lights, to black lights and we wear something that glows and we have a lot of fun.”
White shirts are the extent of our glow in the dark attire. Angie takes it to the next level.
“I have eyelashes and makeup that glow and the light up jewelry.”
Regardless of the lighting or what you’re wearing, Zumba is a great workout.
“It’s more like interval training, so your heart is going up and down, up and down, which burns maximum calories.”
Each instructor has their own flare and flavor, which keeps the workout interesting and fun. By the end of the class, we’ve forgotten how hard we’re working and how ridiculous we might look, and just join the party.
A Zumbathon is being held at the Y in Ankeny this Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Advance tickets costs $15 or $20 at the door. For more information, call (515) 965-8800.
