Chief John Tekippe with the Des Moines Fire Department joined us on Today in Iowa Saturday to discuss the firefighting efforts used at the Younkers building in downtown Des Moines.
Tekippe says the call about the fire came in a little before 1:00 a.m. Saturday. It was initially called in as a 1st alarm fire but quickly moved to a 3rd alarm fire.
As of 8:05 a.m. crews were working on putting out hotspots at the fire. Tekippe says they’ll soon work on determining the structurally integrity of the skywalks and the building itself. When it is safe, they’ll move on to conducting the investigation into the cause of the fire.
