Emerald ash borer.

Cities in the Des Moines metro are taking action against the Emerald Ash Borer.

The invasive pest hasn’t been found in Polk County yet but it likely won’t be long before it is. Last week the insect was found in Jasper County.

The insect kills ash trees when its larvae burrows underneath the bark and eats the inside layers.

Ankeny will host open houses on April 22nd and May 27th to inform residents of the problem. Each seminar will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Ankeny Fire Department.

Des Moines will hold two sessions next Thursday. The first one will be at the Polk County River Place Conference Center at 1:00 p.m.  The next one will be at the Botanical Garden at 6:30 p.m.

Officials will discuss the cities’ plan of action, how to identify the bug, and what homeowners should do.

EAB does not bore deep into the trunks of ash trees. They make serpentine galleries the Cambrian layer that eventually hurdles the tree. There is nothing deep about it.
