FOUR DEAD: Ames-Based Unit Safe In Ft. Hood

Police are on the scene of another fatal shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.

Four people, including the gunman, are dead and 14 others were injured.

Police say 34-year-old Ivan Lopez opened fire on soldiers then turned the gun on himself. Police still don’t know what the motive was.

In November, 2009 13 people were killed by a fellow soldier in a mass shooting on the base.

An Army reserve unit based in Ames is currently at Fort Hood on their way back from a tour in the Middle East. They let loved ones know on Facebook they’re safe.

The 949th Medical Detachment deployed last May. The veterinary unit that cares for military animals and inspects the food that soldiers eat.

Chris Anderson has a sister stationed at Ft. Hood. He says the unit was two blocks away from the shooting. The 38 members returned to the country just yesterday.

Anderson says the unit was hoping to return to Iowa early next week but that process could be delayed by the day’s events
