The Iowa Department of Public Safety says a man who shot a Maquoketa police officer Tuesday and was later found dead, committed suicide.

Sgt. Brendan Zeimet was checking on a truck in the 200 block of West Grove Street shortly before 3:00 a.m. April first when he realized the occupant of the truck was armed. Zeimet and 30-year-old Aaron Scott exchanged fire.

Scott hit Zeimet once in the arm with a shot from a rifle and Zeimet hit Scott with a bullet to the leg.

Scott took off from the scene and other Maquoketa police officers chased him, but lost sight. Scott’s truck was located on its top in a ditch about a half an hour later in Clinton County. Scott was found dead in the truck.

An autopsy shows Scott died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his death has been ruled a suicide.

Zeimet is a 13-year veteran of the department. He was treated for the gunshot to his arm and released. Zeimet is on paid administrative leave pending the results of an investigation into the shooting.
