Dispatch recordings of Des Moines firefighters’ response to the Younkers fire have been released.
The dramatic recordings show just how close firefighters were to danger as the roof collapsed.
Just 20 minutes after the first calls were made, at 1:12 a.m. one firefighter describes the mayhem.
“From this view up here it looks like the roof just caved in. I’d be very well advised not to have anybody inside. I’m not quite sure how far down it went.”
Seconds later a firefighter says, “The south-side of the building just collapsed. The scaffolding just collapsed through the skywalk area as well.”
At 1:14 a.m. command dispatch calls for all firefighters to evacuate the building.
Six firefighters inside the building managed to escape as soon as they heard the building starting to collapse.
